Mabon or the Autumnal Equinox, falls on or around September 19-22. It marks the time of year when day and night are equal, as they are on the Spring Equinox, Ostara. The difference between the two is that on Mabon, the night will overpower the day, and the Sun will weaken until Yule, the Winter Solstice. Mabon is the second of the three harvest festivals, to include Lammas (Lughnasadh), Mabon, and Samhain. It is the harvest of fruits and vegetables, and metaphorically the harvest of the years trials, tribulations, and hard work. On August 23rd the ancient Romans celebrated Vulcanalia  - in honor of the God Volcānus - the God of Fire, Metal-crafting, the Forge, Harmful Fires, Deserts, and Volcanoes. The son of Jupiter and Juno, Volcānus parallels the Greek Hephaestus, the Etruscan Sethlans and the Sicilian Adrano.  During the festival of Vulcanalia, sacrifice and libation was offered to Volcānus in hopes to avert dangerous fires that may ignite under the summer heat.  Bonfires were ignited in honor of Volcānus to which many were given libations of fish and small animals - a spiritual exchange for human life.   It is often said his name is derived from the Latin word     for ‘lightning’ - possibly in relation to the     flames caused by a lightning strike.  It is common among those of the Old Wisdom to keep wood from a tree that has been struck by lightning -     when carried, it is believed to be an amulet of both power and protection. Lammas - August 1 - Lammas, or Lughnasadh (pronounced "LOO-nahs-ah"), is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “Loaf-mass” and is one of the Greater Wiccan Sabbats, usually celebrated on August 1st or 2nd, although occasionally on July 31st. The Lughnasadh Sabbat is a time to celebrate the end of Summer and the beginning of the Autumn season, as well as to usher in the first of three harvest celebrations in the Witches Yearly Calendar. The collecting of  Morning Dew  has been practiced by ancient cultures from all around the world. This simple and ancient ritual is usually conducted at different times from the Spring until late Summer, ( most traditionally during the May Day or Summer Solstice  Festivities ). In many parts of Italy it is a traditional custom to collect Dew on the morning of  The Feast of John the Baptist  (June 24th). This particular practice has many links to ancient pagan traditions, marking a time of fire, fertility and the waning of the Sun. On the eve of  The Feast of John the Baptist,  a large bowl or basin is filled half-way with clean water, to which a few drops of Holy Water were added.
