Autumn Magick – By Firewolf

The crisp air and fallen leaves, sparks the mind of the Witch with magick and mystery. The autumn season is the perfect time to celebrate the bounty and magick of Mother Earth. Many magickal practitioners spend this time storing herbs, potions, incense blends, and oils for later use. Mabon, or the Autumnal Equinox, falls on or around September 20th - marking when day and night are equal, as they are during the vernal equinox or Ostara.

 During the autumnal equinox the night overtakes the day and the Sun weakens until the winter solstice or Yule. In a physical sense Mabon is the harvest of fruits and vegetables; and in a spiritual sense the harvest of the years trials, tribulations, and efforts. We mourn the weakening of the Sun God, and rejoice in the Goddess's bounty that she has given birth to. Our altars are decorated in the autumn colors of gold, coppers, red, and oranges and commonly accented with gourds, oak leaves, acorns, and pumpkins.     

We cast spells for prosperity, abundance, new beginnings, drawing balance, and strength and protection. Mabon is a time of dramatic change, one from the vibrancy and newness of the Summer, to the impending darkness and seeming death of Wintertime. It is for this that we cry, both in sorrow and in happiness.  The Autumn season brings balance and tranquility to our lives and homes.

The following list of herbs and roots can be employed in spiritual rites focused on the autumn season: Acorns, Almonds, Apple and Apple Wood, Ash, Barley, Bittersweet, Calendula, Caraway, Chamomile, Clove Buds, Corn, Fern, Frankincense, Gourds, Honeysuckle, Laurel (Bay), Lemon, Marigold, Marjoram, Milkweed, Mistletoe, Motherwort, Mushrooms, Myrrh, Nectarine, Oak Bark, Orange, Passionflower, Pear, Pomegranate, Pumpkin, Rose, Rose Hips, Rosemary, Rue, Saffron, Sage, Solomon's Seal Root, Squash, Sunflower, Tarragon, Wheat, Yarrow

Autumn Magick - Crystals and Stones
The following list of stones and crystals can be employed in spiritual rites focused on the autumn season: Amber, Aventurine, Brown Goldstone, Carnelian, Cat’s Eye, Citrine, Clear Quartz, Diamond, Gold, Granite, Moss Agate, Opal, Peridot, Ruby, Smokey Quartz, Topaz, Tourmaline, Yellow Jasper
AUTUMN ABUNDANCE INCENSE RECIPE

 one teaspoon frankincense resin
one teaspoon apple wood
one teaspoon clove buds
one teaspoon lemon peel
two teaspoons laurel leaves
two teaspoons tarragon
two teaspoons rose hips
three drops nectarine oil
nine drops honeysuckle oil
thirteen drops frankincense oil

Blend and grind the herbal ingredients together and add the drops of oil.  Burn this blend on a glowing charcoal during spiritual rites focused on attracting abundance, balance, and prosperity.

The Witches Harvest - Cornucopia – July 31st - August 2nd  Meititura, Lughnasadh, Lammas, The First Harvest, Harvest of Corn and Grain  Meititura - The Harvest of Grain and Wheat  During the month of July into early August, corn and grains were the first crops to be harvested by the ancestors of the Witch. In ancient Sicily, the ‘Meititura’ (Harvest) was period of hard work, festivity and the blessings of the ‘First Fruits’ of the Agricultural Season. An effigy or puppet of the Grain Mother was fashioned from sheaves of wheat and adorned in female attire. This ‘puppet’ was then carried in procession throughout the local villages in joyous festivity. The sheaves of the Effigy were later used for amulets of protection and good fortune.
