The Beach Bean is a sprawling coastal plant found creeping across sandy beaches and dunes. Its thick green vines travel over the sand, producing rounded trifoliate leaves, delicate pink-purple flowers, and eventually large woody pods containing distinctive beans. Though seemingly delicate against the vastness of the sea, Beach Bean is remarkably resilient, thriving in conditions where many plants struggle to survive. One of the Beach Bean’s most striking qualities is its ability to stabilize shifting dunes. Its wandering vines spread across loose sand, helping hold the coastline together against wind and erosion. For this reason, the plant carries a natural symbolism of protection, endurance, grounding, and holding one’s place even when the world around us is constantly changing.
In magick, Beach Bean can be worked with as an ally of resilience and boundaries. Growing directly at the meeting place of land and sea, it belongs naturally to thresholds, the shifting line between the known and unknown, solid ground and moving water. It can be incorporated into workings for emotional protection, surviving periods of upheaval, safe journeys, adapting to change, and remaining rooted while circumstances move around you.
Its connection to the ocean also makes Beach Bean particularly suited to ocean magick. The plant survives salt, wind, blazing sunlight, drought, and shifting sand without surrendering its hold on the shore. It reminds us that strength does not always mean remaining rigid. One Small Piece of Dried Beach Bean Vine or Leaf
One Tablespoon Sea Salt
One Tablespoon Rosemary
One Small Piece of Driftwood Blue or White Cloth Bag
Place the dried Beach Bean material, sea salt, rosemary, and driftwood together inside the cloth bag. Hold the charm between your hands and visualize yourself standing firmly upon a shoreline as waves approach and retreat around you. As the water moves, visualize anything harmful being carried away while the ground beneath you remains strong.
Carry the charm when traveling, entering unfamiliar situations, or whenever you feel that your personal boundaries need strengthening. It may also be placed near the entrance of the home as a symbolic guardian against negative and/or unwanted influences.
TIDE-TURNING CANDLE
A working for moving through difficult circumstances and allowing changing conditions to begin moving in your favor. For this rite you will need the following ingredients,
One Dried Beach Bean Leaf or Flower
One Tablespoon Sea Salt
One Tablespoon Dried Lemongrass
White Candle Small Bowl of Ocean Water or Salt Water
Place the bowl of water before the candle. Arrange the sea salt around the candle and place the Beach Bean and lemongrass beside it. Light the candle and focus upon the circumstances you wish to move beyond. Imagine the tide gradually changing direction and carrying stagnant energy away from you. State out loud the following incantation,
“Seed of the shore where two worlds meet, root my spirit, guide my feet.
Turning tide and shifting sea, carry change and strengthen me.”
Allow yourself to sit quietly before the flame while imagining the tide retreating and leaving behind a smooth, open stretch of sand, a new path waiting to be crossed. When finished, extinguish the candle and return the salt water to the earth away from delicate plants or freshwater sources.
RESILIENCE INCENSE
An incense blend created for strength, perseverance, protection, and remaining grounded during turbulent periods. For this incense recipe you will need the following ingredients,
One Tablespoon Dried Beach Bean Leaves or Flowers
One Tablespoon Frankincense Resin
One Tablespoon Cedar
One Tablespoon Rosemary
Pinch of Sea Salt
Nine Drops of Cypress Oil
Grind the dried Beach Bean material, rosemary, and cedar together. Blend with the frankincense and a small pinch of sea salt. Add the cypress oil gradually and mix well. Burn a small pinch on charcoal while focusing upon your ability to endure difficult circumstances without losing yourself within them.
Visualize the Beach Bean spreading over a windswept dune, holding the shifting earth together as ocean winds move around it. Allow its symbolism to remind you that adaptability and strength can exist together, you may bend, travel, change, and grow while still remaining rooted in who you are.
